Albania is a country located in South-East Europe within the Mediterranean Sea. The climate can be defined as Mediterranean climate - due to the geographical conditions with varieties and influences of a continental climate. The average annual temperature is about 16°C, the average annual precipitation less 1200 mm. In Tirana, two summer months can be described as arid. In Saranda 300 sunny days are recorded annually. Overall, the weather on the coast and the coastal plains is Mediterranean. The northern and eastern mountainous regions have harsh winters. The climate in the mountains is - the higher you get - a typical mountain climate. The Albanian Alps in the north are considered to be among the most humid regions in Europe.
In the warm areas of the plains the summers are sometimes hot, the winters are mild. May to october is a good period for bathing vacation. The average water temperature is about 23 °C. On the coast, the average number of sunny days is 270 to 300 per year. The hottest time is in July, the coldest in January.
Tirana usually has two dry summer months, but there can be heavy rainfall in winter. In the high mountains in the north and east of Albania you can expect snow from November to March.
The climate in Skhodra is sub-Mediterranean. In addition to mild and rainy winters, in which the temperature hardly falls below 5 °C, there are hot and dry summers with daily maximum temperatures of over 40 °C. The water temperature of Lake Skhodra varies from 7.3 °C in winter to 27 °C in summer.
The best time to travel to Albania is considered to be spring from April to about June and both September and October. Both periods are neither too hot nor too cold and the precipitation keeps within limits. For those who don't mind the heat, the high summer months of July and August are recommended. In the area of the coast the heat is bearable due to a sea breeze. However, the further you get away from the coast, the more unbearable the summer temperatures can be (except the mountains).
