Best Time To Travel To: Belize

Belize is a relatively small country in Central America. The country lies between 16° and 18° north. It has borders with Guatemala and Mexico. Belize also has quite a respectable coastline on the Caribbean Sea. In front of it lies the famous Belize Barrier Reef with several islands and atolls. Much of Belize is relatively flat. Only in the southwest (Maya Mountains) it becomes mountainous and it can rise to about 1,200 meters.

The climate in Belize can be described as tropical-humid. Belize has comparatively high rainfall. On the coast it can rain very heavily. There is a distinct rainy season that usually lasts from May to November. The rainy season in the north starts a little later than that in the south. But the south is more rainy than the north. In the south, the average rainfall is 4,000mm per year - in the north, the average is 1,500mm. Rain in Belize can always be accompanied by violent storms and cause flooding in the country. Basically, it can rain outside the main rainy season in any month. Relatively dry periods are January and February and May to June. Then usually blow well perceptible easterly winds. The driest period for all of Belize is often February through April.

Unless you are in the mountains, temperatures in the country are warm to hot throughout the year. Due to the high precipitation tendency, the humidity is usually quite high. On the coast, however, one can always hope for winds blowing from the Caribbean across the country, making the heat quite bearable.

The temperature differences over the year are actually rather small. It is coolest from December to March, after which the warm season begins. As you can see from the climate table below, there is not much difference in temperatures between cool and warm seasons. Weather phenomena in Belize are the Northers and the Maugers. The Northers bring cold air masses from North America into the country in winter. It can then cool down for a short time and become rainy and stormy. Then in August, the maugers can often cause extremely hot spells with relative calm. The hurricane season normally lasts from August to October.
