Bulgaria is located in the southeast of Europe. Climatically, Bulgaria is somewhere between the Mediterranean climate and the rather cold continental climate of the southern parts of Russia. The country has a coastline on the Black Sea. In the north, the Danube flows and roughly forms the border with Romania. Bulgaria also borders Serbia and Greece.
Bulgaria has different climatic zones. The high mountains have more precipitation and are colder. The river valleys (Danube lowlands and the Maritz basin), on the other hand, have a rather dry continental climate. Mild and maritime is the Black Sea coast, which is of course ideal for bathing vacations.
In the lowlands and along the coast, summers are very warm and sometimes even really hot. Especially in the lowlands in the interior of the country the summers are often very hot, but the winters are quite cold. Rainfall is fairly uniform throughout the year and not extremely heavy. There is usually a certain maximum of precipitation in summer.
In contrast to the inland plains, which are quite cold in winter, and of course the cool mountainous regions, the winters on the coast are always somewhat warmer. Nevertheless, one has to be prepared for extremely cold phases every now and then. This is especially the case when winds from the direction of Russia prevail. When it gets really cold in the country, the big rivers can always freeze over.
Even if you can enjoy winter sports in the mountainous regions of Bulgaria, Bulgaria is mainly a popular summer holiday destination. Here the vacationer is attracted especially by the coasts of the Black Sea. There it is beautiful in summer, the climate is basically Mediterranean. However, the good phases can also be abruptly interrupted by rather violent storms. Then it can rain quite heavily. Nevertheless, the weather is usually very nice in summer. July and August are the warmest months, when the beaches of the Black Sea are teeming with tourists. The bathing season usually lasts from May to October, when the water is quite warm.
On the higher parts of the country, of course, the climate is cooler. Sofia, for example, is located at about 550 meters. Here the winters are quite cold and the summers always stay rather fresh. The region around Sofia is quite rainy in May and June. Maybe you should choose another time to travel here. On the highest points in the country the snow can stay until the end of May or into June.
Typical for the coastal regions would be, for example, the climate table of Varna. For the flat inland, Plovdiv in the Thracian Plain might be. For higher inland places, the table of Sofia (550 meters) would be typical.
The best time for touring the country is from May to October. For pure bathing vacations on the Black Sea coast, the best time is June to September. For those who want to go to Bulgaria for skiing, the best time is the period from December to March.
