Cameroon is located in Central Africa between 2 ° and 12 ° N and borders Nigeria, Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Basically, the climate in the country is called tropical. However, there are a few peculiarities, especially the altitude must be considered and there are blatant differences between North and South. The North tends to be much drier than the South.
The North has climatic conditions that are similar to those of Nigeria and Chad. There is a rainy season from April to September. The dry season is from October to March. The average temperature in the North is around 32 ° C. In general, it can be said that the further north you get, the drier and hotter it gets. A very hot dry phase can sometimes be between February and May.
Heading south you reach the central and western highlands. Here it is much cooler with an average of approx. 22 ° C and it is rainy all year round. Most of the precipitation is found in the mountains of Western Cameroon. Here you find one of the rainiest areas in the south of the so-called Cameroon Mountain, which brings about 10,000mm of precipitation per year. In the Highland you can normally assume a dry season between December and March, although as I said, there is always rain during this dry season. The highest regions in the country also receive snow in winter.
It can rain every month in South Cameroon, with two distinct rainy seasons and two drier periods per year. Here one speaks of a kind of equatorial climate. The occurrence of rainforests is typical, which requires good rainfall. In principle, you have to expect abundant rainfall in the south from March to September, on the coastal regions it usually rains extremely heavily between June and September. It is drier in December and January and sometimes even in February.
Yaounde's Climatetable is typical of South Cameroon. The Climatetable of Douala is typical of the coastal region. From June to September it is more rainy here than in the rest of the country. The reason is the monsoon of Guinea which rains down due to the mountain ranges behind the coast.
The ideal travel time for the whole fo Cameroon could be called the period from December to February. The best time for the North could be October to March, for the Highland and the South the best travel time for Cameroon is from December to February / March.
