Costa Rica borders Panama to the south and Nicaragua to the north. The country is in Central America. Like most countries here, Costa Rica is also quite mountainous with heights of up to 3,700 meters. In addition, Costa Rica has coastal areas on the Pacific and the Caribbean.
Costa Rica basically has a tropical climate. The climate typically has two clearly perceptible seasons, which are characterized as rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season is between May and November, the dry season between December and April.
The climate table of the capital San Jose is representative for the Tierra Templada. The climate in this region is generally much more moderate than that on the coast. The nights are cooler, the days are less hot and it's raining a lot here.
The climate by the sea is warmer, with temperatures on the Caribbean coast being higher than those on the Pacific coast. In terms of rainfall, the area of the Caribbean coast is at the top of Costa Rica. It rains almost twice as much as e. g. in San Jose.
The higher you go in the country, the colder it gets. It is comparatively cool especially on the plateaus. The coastal areas in Costa Rica, on the other hand, are very hot all year round with a high humidity in the rainy season.
Basically the best time for Costa Rica is the dry season, i.e. the time from the end of December to April. What to consider: December to February are holidays in Costa Rica. This means that there is a lot going on in the country. Therefore May to July could be interesting as it is outside the main season and it (usually) doesn't rain that much. The rainy season can be interesting for surfers on the Pacific coast.
