Djerba is an island in the Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia, on the Mediterranean Sea and the Libyan Sea. It is the largest island in North Africa and is connected to Tunisia by a dam. Djerba is traditionally one of the most important tourist destinations in Tunisia, and in the past this was especially true for the long sandy beaches of the north coast. In the meantime, however, the east coast has also been expanded to include tourism.
Climatically, Djerba is on the sunny side. Some speak of a desert climate, but this seems less dramatic due to the marine climate. In fact, the island gets an extremely sunny, but also mild climate all year round. The average annual precipitation is just 200mm, with over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. In winter the average temperature is around 14 ° C, in summer it is a pleasant 26 ° C. Seen in this way, you could definitely speak of a kind of Mediterranean climate, but due to the proximity of the deserts you have to reckon with very hot winds.
The main travel season is summer from around June to September. Then it is usually hot and sunny. The days with temperatures around 30 ° C are comparatively humid, it gets hotter, then the humidity feels lower and you can tolerate the heat very well, also due to the winds from the sea. Otherwise there can be a desert wind that brings desert heat from the land. Then it can get unbearably warm for a short time. 40 ° C is not uncommon, but the thermometer can rise even higher.
October and November then bring the first slight signs of deterioration in the weather, also with light rain. The winter from December to February remains mild, however, it hardly goes below 10 ° C during the day, but at night it can touch the 0 ° C mark.
The transition from March to summer is usually a nice time of year. It is getting significantly warmer again and the tendency to rain is decreasing continuously. When the warm south winds reach the island, it can reach 35 ° C.
In theory, Djerba is a year-round destination. Of course, that depends on what you want to do. But since the island is primarily a destination for bathing tourists, it has to be said that the best time is especially in the period from May to October. If you want the water to be particularly warm, you should perhaps not come before June or July. In May you have to assume water temperatures around 19 ° C, too cold for many. In June it goes to about 22 ° C, until October the water temperatures are reliably between 25 and 28 ° C. In October you have to reckon with the first 'bad' days.
