The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic takes up two thirds of the island, with Haiti in the west. Hispaniola is one of the most mountainous islands in the Caribbean. The highest peaks reach over 3,000 meters. But there are also many plains in the country, of course the coastal areas in the Caribbean are of particular interest.
Climatically the altitudes are to be considered separately. They are cooler and also have more rainfall than the lowlands in the country. In winter, temperatures around 0 ° C are theoretically possible at high altitudes. In the lower areas, on the other hand, it is warm all year round. The south coast is relatively dry and the east coast with the region La Altagracia / Punta Cana is considered to be one of the driest corners of the Dominican Republic. The north coast is one of the wettest areas in the Caribbean, especially in the winter season.
The winters are not cold, exceptions are of course the high altitudes. On the north coast it rains quite heavily. In addition, you have to expect violent storms from September to November. But from December to around April the DomRep is an ideal travel destination.
The rainy season is actually in the summer from May to August. As a rule, however, it is not perceived as being a nuisance by most travelers. The downpours are normally short and strong and can be quite refreshing. Basically, due to the precipitation, the humidity in the Dominican Republic has to be described as quite high. If you have problems with this, you shouldn't necessarily go to the country during this time, because coupled with the warmth, the humidity is very stressful for the organism.
Winter is generally considered to be the best time for the Dominican Republic. Usually by December the storms have calmed down. It is warm and relatively dry in the country until April. The climate is almost ideal for Central Europeans, but the DomRep is also well booked. Usually it rains most in May and October. February and March are the driest.
