Estonia belongs to the typical countries with Nordic character. That means in plain language: cool and pronounced winters, which can also be quite long. Summers can be nice - but are usually quite short. In the interior of the country, the climate can be somewhat unpleasant, which is also caused by swamp and morass areas. The summers there - although very short - can be hot and unpleasantly humid. Winters, however, are long and quite cold here. The coastal areas and offshore islands are generally milder - summers here are also relatively short, but quite pleasant. The winters are somewhat milder, but still long and quite crisp.
Winter is certainly a major topic when it comes to Estonia. Reliable months with plus temperatures are actually only June, July and August. In all other months temperatures below zero are possible (but not the rule!).
Winter usually lasts from the middle/end of October until March or April. During this time, the average temperature in winter is below freezing by default. It is also possible to expect a closed snow cover in large parts of the country in winter. The amount of snow normally increases towards the southeast. A certain peculiarity is certainly that many coastal areas have frozen water surfaces. Overall, however, it must be said that winters in Estonia are not quite as harsh as those in Russia, for example. Nevertheless, the winters are long and especially from December on, the dusky and cloudy weather can be a bit hard on the mind.
As a rule, it is not until May that you can really get out of the winter. Then it begins to bloom in the country. It then slowly gets warmer. Until August, you can expect peak temperatures of around 30°C in a nice summer. In summer it is beautiful in the country and not only the vegetation blossoms noticeably. Summer is certainly one of the most attractive times to travel in Estonia. Also September can still be very pleasant, but on the other hand, cooler periods can occur here. October is usually much cooler. The peak temperatures rarely reach 20°C, it is usually no longer very sunny and also a bit rainy. November is cool in any case, there were already low temperatures of not less than -21°C in November, even colder is December and the coolest months are usually January and February. The thermometer rarely manages to reach the plus degrees in these two months. The lows can then go to a maximum of -30°C. Also March is still quite cold, you rarely get above 0°C here. But in March, temperatures of 12°C are theoretically possible - on the other hand, lows of -25°C have been measured in Tallinn. In April you can expect normal temperatures. Peak values of 21°C are possible, but even here it can sometimes go well below 0°C. Even in May it can go just below 0°C, but May is usually quite a pleasant month. Only June, July and August are really reliable in the plus range.
The best time to travel to Estonia is summer between June and August. May and September could also be considered as a good time to travel to Estonia, although it can be quite cool in these two months.
