Best Time To Travel To: Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura shows very little temperature fluctuations and has a warm and temperate climate that is relatively typical for the Canaries. However, the climate is largely determined by the low mountainous character. In plain language this means: Fuerteventura lacks mountains and larger elevations. As a result few clouds form, which is why it also rains little. The trade winds and sometimes the Scirocco, a hot wind from North Africa, have a great influence on the climate on Fuerteventura. As if out of the blue, the Scirocco can bring about a significant increase in temperatures. It then becomes hot and dry, the temperature rises by up to 10° Celsius for about three to four days. As fast as it comes, the Scirocco will go as fast again.

Overall, however, the climate remains relatively pleasantly warm all year round. The great heat is mostly absent, the balancing factor of the sea and the trade winds take care of that. They blow on the island and ensure that the hot and dry Sahara air is mostly kept out (unless the Scirocco prevails). As mentioned above, the island has rather little precipitation, which can be explained by the lack of higher mountain ranges. However, the dry and year-round warm climate also has negative consequences. The vegetation was pushed back (also by human hands). There are practically no more natural water reservoirs. In addition, the winter precipitation flows unused through the dry soil. This leads to a kind of desertification on the island.

An optimal travel time is difficult to name, because the island offers itself as a holiday destination all year round. Fuerteventura is very popular because of its consistently warm climate, especially in winter between October and December. Heavy rains last came in January. In July and August Fuerteventura is an Eldorado for windsurfers because of the strong winds that prevail at this time.
