Guyana is a state in South America, which lies between 1 ° and 8 ° North on the Atlantic coast. The former British colony borders Venezuela to the west, Brazil to the south and Suriname to the east.
The opening to the Atlantic causes relatively humid winds all year round, which pull into the country. Guyana is relatively flat, only towards the borders with Venezuela and Brazil does it rise to a plateau with a few mountain peaks with a maximum of 2,750 meters.
Twice a year, Guyana is influenced by the so-called Intertropical Convergence. It brings a lot of clouds and therefore also a lot of rain into the country.
The lowlands have a hot and humid equatorial climate all year round. The humidity here is quite high. The climate is constant and hardly changes over the year or over the day. That can be relatively stressful because the humidity is quite high all year round. Rainy days alternate with rather dry days relatively continuously. At night it is usually extremely humid, during the day the wind from the sea causes some relaxation.
The temperatures in Guyana rarely rise to extremely high values, but as I said, the high humidity is very stressful. The sun doesn't shine too much either, in the wetter months on average around five hours a day, in summer on average around eight hours a day. Basically the months from May to July and November to January in the lowlands are rainy season. The climate table of Georgetown is relatively typical for the lowlands.
At the altitudes you will find a completely different climate. It rains less here and there is usually only one main rainy season from April to September. The daytime temperatures are a little lower than those in the lowlands, especially at night it becomes much more pleasant and cooler on the high altitudes. Overall, the humidity here is also much lower all year round.
The best travel time for Guyana is most likely towards the end of the rainy season. Thus e.g.. February and September are good months to travel. Basically, the period from October to May is recommended for trips to the country.
