Hungary is climatically influenced by its somewhat isolated location. The country is bordered, for example, by the Alps and the Carpathian Mountains and thus receives little influence from the Atlantic climate. Hungary itself is a relatively flat country, it is determined by river valleys like that of the Danube. Small areas in the north and west are a bit hilly and rise there up to 600 meters.
Hungary has a predominantly continental climate that is temperate. That means: warm to hot summers, cold winters, relatively little rainfall. After all, Hungary has 1,800 hours of sunshine a year and the country has a fairly dry climate due to its location. It rains most in the transition from spring to summer and then more in western Hungary. The amount of precipitation decreases from west to east. The climate around Pecs, one of the warmest regions in Hungary, has an almost Mediterranean character.
Within the country, however, there are rather minor climatic differences due to the open location. Debrecen in the east and Budapest in the north, for example, show only minor differences, although Budapest is located at the intersection of the Buda Mountains and the Danube Valley. As a result, Hungary does not have a precisely predictable climate. The summers are usually always very good, they can sometimes be worse, and the winters can also sometimes be less cold or less snowy. Most of the rainfall usually comes down in spring or early summer. The summers are mostly always very friendly and at least warm. The sun shines an average of up to ten hours a day.
Winters are usually cold and many parts of Hungary usually have good snowfall for at least a month. The Danube is often frozen over during the cold phases. It usually gets coldest when east winds blow into the country from Ukraine. The transitions from summer to winter or winter to summer can often happen very quickly. In some places spring and autumn are only weakly pronounced.
The months of May, June as well as September and October could be named as the best time for Hungary, even if the main season is of course in summer from the end of May to the beginning of September. In spring and early autumn, however, it is still relatively warm and nature shows itself from its most beautiful side. In addition, one bypasses the main travel season. The bathing season at Lake Balaton usually begins at the end of April and lasts until September; the main season here could also be described as the phase from the end of May to the end of August. Then it is recognized that there is a lot going on around Lake Balaton. The best time to travel to Lake Balaton could therefore be the early summer or early autumn phase. The same applies to Budapest, but the optimal travel time for Budapest cannot be precisely fixed. As for any city trip destination, the whole year is considered to be well suited. However, it can sometimes be very hot in Budapest in midsummer. One reason why most Budapesters are on vacation at this time and the city is besieged by tourists.
