Best Time To Travel To: Tuscany/Toscana, Italy

Tuscany is a region in central Italy. The capital of the region is Florence. Tuscany is quite popular with vacationers, among other things, because of its Mediterranean climate. That means roughly: the summers are dry and quite hot, the winters are mild and more humid than the summer. Basically, however, one must also consider the geographical conditions in Tuscany. It applies, as almost everywhere, the rule of thumb - the higher, the cooler and more precipitation.

Tuscany in the course of the year

Winter in Tuscany, similar to most parts of Europe, goes from mid/late November to late February/March with January being the coldest month with average temperatures between 4 and 7°C. In winter, Tuscany is relatively quiet. Many sights/museums and accommodations are closed, especially campsites and caravan parks are closed in winter. The thermometer falls in the lower regions in winter well below 10 ° C, but frost is rare in the lowlands. Basically, the precipitation tendency is higher in winter, whereby it tends to rain in the lower elevations - in the higher ones it tends to snow. The higher the altitude, the cooler it is. At the highest altitudes in Tuscany, you can expect frost and snow in winter. Monte Amlata can be considered the winter sports center of Tuscany.

Normally it gets warmer from April. It is a transitional month that can be changeable. This means that April can still be rainy. From May onwards, the warmth prevails and at the same time it becomes much drier. Spring in Tuscany is ideal for active vacations, i.e. for hikers, cyclists, but also for the cultural trip. Less suitable is the phase for bathing. The water has not really warmed up yet during this period.

The great warmth sets in from mid to late June and lasts until September. It is then usually quite dry and very warm - in the warmest phase (July, August) even hot. The time is in the flatter actually only ideal for a bathing vacation, at the beaches it becomes then also quite full. Then there are many locals, especially in August. Active vacationers have to be hard-boiled in summer, because in the plains it is extremely hot in places. Active vacation in the summer actually only makes sense at altitudes above about 1,000 meters, where it is naturally somewhat cooler.

The heat starts to subside in September. September and October are months worth considering. It is still pleasantly warm. The water holds a lot of heat and in this period (especially in September) you can still swim well. However, an active vacation is also possible in this period, because the cooling down at night brings a pleasant refreshment.

When is the best time for Tuscany

Tuscany is, theoretically, a possible year-round destination. It depends, as always, on the individual preferences. For those who want an active vacation or a cultural vacation, spring and autumn are ideal. That is, the best time to travel to Tuscany would be in the case of active vacation April/May and September/October. For those who want to take a bathing vacation, the summer from June to August is the best time to travel to Tuscany. Those who are hardy can also plan a vacation in Tuscany in winter - but then it is more rainy in the lower elevations and in the higher elevations it snows quite a bit. Therefore, the winter should be interesting especially for winter sports enthusiasts.
