Jamaica belongs to the larger West Indies and is located west of Haiti and south of Cuba. Climatically, Jamaica belongs to the tropical areas. The climate is therefore quite stable over the year and quite warm, depending on the region, the annual differences are only 2 ° C. In Kingston, for example, the average maximum temperatures are between 30 and 32°C.
Climatically, one must actually speak of unfavorable conditions, because the humidity in Jamaica is comparatively high. Coupled with the high temperatures, this actually results in a conceivably unfavorable combination. But Jamaica benefits from the trade winds during the day. They make the temperatures pleasant. At night, a cooler wind blows from the high altitudes into the valley or to the coasts. So you have very pleasant conditions also at night.
Jamaica is one of the more mountainous Caribbean islands, as the island rises to over 2,300 meters in the Blue Mountains. Climatically, the high altitude regions play an important role. At the very top it is cooler, though not by much. One assumes an average difference of 4° C to the low-lying regions. Therefore, snow is actually untypical. In winter, however, there can be periods of uncomfortable weather. The northern slopes, for example, receive a lot of rain. But the mountains of the south coast provide protection, which is quite dry. Interesting regarding the south coast is the fact that a large part of the annual rain can fall on one day - namely when a hurricane sweeps over the coast.
From August to November, Jamaica is referred to as a hurricane season, with July to September being a core time here. However, Jamaica is described as an island that is not usually hit quite as hard by hurricanes - at least in direct comparison with other hurricane areas. The phase is not always equated with the rainy season, because before the hurricane season there can be heavy rainfall. However, one should keep in mind that the hurricane season can always bring heavy storms and sometimes also short and extremely heavy showers. As mentioned above, in the course of a hurricane on the south coast, a good quarter of the total annual precipitation can fall in one day in extreme cases. A typical hurricane month is normally August, July and September can also be very stormy. In June/July as well as October/November one must also expect storms. However, these usually do not last quite as long.
As a rule, the period from December to April is generally considered the best time to travel to Jamaica. The driest months are usually January to March. The month with the highest rainfall is usually October.
