The Madeira archipelago consists of two inhabited and some uninhabited islands. The main island is mountainous and of volcanic origin. The highest point extends to over 1,800 meters. Even if the climate is similar to that of the coastal regions of California, for example, the sea has a climatically balancing effect. Basically, the island is very popular because of its mild winters and relatively sunny summers without the very high heat.
Madeira is climatically quite diverse, which is due to the geographical location and the nature of the island. One can divide Madeira in two parts climatically: north and south. The north is rainier, while the south has a subtropical climate in places.
In summer the northeast trade wind acts on the whole island, in winter it is more influenced by a westerly wind. During the year, however, there is mainly a wind from the northeast, which pulls from the coast of Portugal towards Cape Verde. A lot of moisture comes with the wind. The winters are relatively humid on the island, especially at higher altitudes. From May to September, on the other hand, it is often sunny and cloudless, even if you have to reckon with light rain every now and then.
It is coolest in Madeira on average in December, where the temperature is around 19° C a day. It gets warmest around July and August with an average of 25 ° C. In theory, one can travel to Madeira all year round. The best travel time for Madeira is likely to be in the period from May to September. After all, one has to reckon with strong storms in the winter season due to the observations. It was most recently in November 2012 and 2013 or in February 2014 with surprisingly heavy snowfall.
