Best Time To Travel To: Maldives

The Maldives is made up of a whole chain of islands. Of the approx. 7000 islands, only 200 are inhabited. The chain extends over a north-south extension of approx. 1,900km.

The climate of the Maldives can be described as a (humid) tropical climate. The temperatures are pleasantly warm all year round. This has a positive effect on the water temperatures which are very pleasantly warm all year round.

The islands, which are close to or south of the equator, show a slightly higher proportion of rain overall, but it is fairly evenly distributed over the whole year. The least rain falls between November and March. Normally, the sun shines between eight and nine hours per day for an average of 9 months. Only in the rainier months does the number decrease to 3 - 4 hours per day.

The northern islands of the Maldives are considered to be a little more susceptible to storms. You have to reckon with violent storms, especially between August and November. The southwest monsoon from May to October can always bring some rain and storm with it. The opposite pole is the northeast monsoon, which usually brings dry and less stormy weather from January to April. The time between these two monsoons is very interesting. It is not exactly predictable, but the time of the monsoon change brings almost windless weather for about 14 days. This is ideal for a beach holiday, but sports that rely on wind offer little cause for joy, especially during this time. These changeover times are either in spring or in autumn.

The best time to visit the Maldives depends on what exactly you want to do. The best time to travel to the Maldives for a beach holiday is between January and March. If you need a little more wind (surfers, for example), you may find the optimal travel time for the Maldives in the phase of the southwest monsoon (May-October). Then a stronger breeze blows, but the monsoons can of course also be uncomfortable. The phase from June to September could be named as the best time during the southwest monsoon.
