Best Time To Travel To: Malta

Malta - or more precisely the Maltese islands with Malta and Gozo - are located in the central Mediterranean, roughly between Sicily and North Africa. This puts Malta in one of the warmest regions of the Mediterranean. The islands are relatively flat and are not very large. Due to the lack of elevations on the islands, the Mediterranean acts as the primary climate influence. Beneath that important are Winds from nearby Africa, but also from Northern Europe. The climate is quite similar to that of southern Greece.

The winters in Malta are mild with rare cold spells. When it gets cold, it is mostly caused by winds from northern Europe. In summer it can get quite hot in Malta, but the permanent sea breezes always have a cooling effect. The winds in particular can be a bit more unpleasant in spring and autumn. Then the Scirocco blows over from Africa and brings very hot air into the country. The fact is that Malta gets a lot more of it than southern Greece, for example - but the Scirocco is less humid. Nevertheless, under the influence of the Scirocco it is often extremely hot.

Rain falls little and Malta is drier than e.g. Southern Italy. There is enough sun in Malta. In winter you get a good 5 hours of sunshine a day, in summer over 12 hours of sunshine. The climate table of Valletta could be regarded as typical for the climate in Malta.

It usually gets coldest in January with usually around 14 degrees. Most of the rain is usually from November to February.

When is the best time to travel to Malta

The best time for Malta is probably between May and October, when it is also the main season. But it is also very dry on the islands, especially from May to August. If you don't want it that hot, autumn could be interesting for you.
