Menorca has a relatively typical Mediterranean climate, which one would expect from the Balearic Islands. The temperatures are mild, the annual average is around 17 ° C. The winters are mild but humid. Summers are warm to hot and usually dry.
Overall, Menorca is the wettest and coolest of the Balearic Islands (but that doesn't mean anything). Menorca is comparatively flat and is therefore strongly influenced by the winds. That actually makes the heat quite bearable. However, an increase in peak temperatures can also be observed in Menorca. In recent years, the thermometer has risen to almost 40 ° C. But these are (still) exceptions. Menorca has an average of around 2,500 hours of sunshine per year. It rains relatively little, but Menorca is relatively humid for the Balearic Islands. The average amount of precipitation in the southeast is approx. 450mm, in the northeast and the center up to approx. 650mm.
As mentioned, Menorca is a relatively flat island that lacks very large elevations. As a result, the island is of course more exposed to the winds than other islands. Not least because of this, Menorca is often referred to as the Isle of the Wind. The dominant wind is the Tramuntana, which blows from the north. The Tramuntana is a dry, but also a little fresh wind. It has certainly shaped parts of the landscape and, especially in summer, always ensures a pleasant breeze, which softens the very great heat. Its opponent is the south wind Migjorn, which brings quite warm and slightly more humid air.
It usually rains most in autumn through winter from October through March. It can be said that the precipitation tendency e.g. in the southeast is lower than in the center of the island and in the northeast. Basically there are only a few very dry months. The air in Menorca is therefore relatively humid. In summer, the Tramuntana ensures relaxation here, but in winter the humidity can be quite high.
The winters in Menorca are, as is typical of the Balearic Islands, mild. Snow is a rarity, but it can happen. On average, the temperatures in winter are 10-14 degrees. However, even in winter there is a relatively constant wind that makes the temperatures appear colder than they are.
Spring begins at the end of February / beginning of March. Somewhat confusing are les seques de gener, the dry days in January that appear every year and make spring appear for a few days in January. But only for a few days. It doesn't get significantly warmer until March. However, the spring months are mostly mixed in terms of temperature. It usually doesn't get really warm until the middle to the end of May. Spring is therefore rarely seen as the ideal travel time for sunbathing but not too bad for outdoor activities.
Summer can be tough in Menorca. While May and June are still relatively pleasant months, July and August can get really hot. Sometimes uncomfortably hot too. Nevertheless, summer is likely to be the ideal travel time for many. May and June are very suitable. Then it is nice in Menorca, but not that hot yet. July and August are ideal for people who are hungry for the sun. Autumn can also have its good sides in Menorca. However, it is rarely seen as the ideal travel time. Because autumn is very rainy. September is usually still a very friendly month with good weather. But from October you have to expect a lot of rain. From November it will be noticeably colder and you can already feel the winter.
The main season in Menorca is from May to October. This period is often referred to as the ideal travel time for Menorca. The months of May, June and September are often highlighted here. But there are also other delightful phases. The cool months of December to February can be interesting because then the almond trees are in bloom. Many long-term vacationers come especially in winter from October to March and appreciate the not-so-warm climate on the island.
