When is the best time to travel to: Romania

Romania is located in the south-east of Europe and borders to Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine and Moldova. But there is also a small stretch of coast on the Black Sea.

In the east and south Romania is comparatively flat, whereas in the interior and in the west the Carpathians determine the picture and Romania is mountainous and hilly here. Basically, the climate in Romania is called temperate continental. That means: the winters are often cold and quite snowy, the summers are warm and can also be hot. The precipitation tendency in the country is actually not very high, only in the higher parts of the Carpathians one can notice a higher precipitation tendency. Most of the precipitation occurs in spring and summer, but of course also in winter, where precipitation often comes down as snow.

The coastal section on the Black Sea, which has a relatively mild climate even in winter, is climatically favored. The Danube valley can be quite cold in winter. The often abrupt transition from winter to summer is astonishing. Spring is often not very pronounced and climatically very changeable. On the other hand, late summer and autumn are clearly noticeable and usually drier.

The amount of precipitation decreases from north to south, from west to east and from the mountains to the plains. It can rain up to 1,400mm in the Carpathians, up to 600mm on the Vltava, up to 700mm in Transylvania and up to 500mm in the lowlands of the Danube. The Danube Delta is one of the areas with the lowest rainfall in Romania. It usually rains the most in June.

Even if one can assume a fairly stable climate in Romania, it is relatively difficult to describe the climate simply. Due to the continental slope, the climate can tend to extreme values. That means: a winter can be moderate, but sometimes extremely cold (temperatures down to -25 ° C are definitely possible). The following applies to summer: they can be pleasantly warm, but sometimes extremely hot and also very dry (temperatures over 40 ° C are quite possible in Romania). Therefore, predictions are even more difficult here, because Romania often has big differences in year-on-year comparison. A rainy summer could well be followed by a pleasant summer. The winters can also vary in severity. Ultimately, Romania is a country that usually has warm and sunny summers. You can then count on an average of 10 hours of sun a day. In return, the winters are usually cold and the sun rarely shines. As mentioned at the beginning, there are basically three climatic regions that can be distinguished quite well. The coastal areas on the Black Sea have a mild climate. The summers are sunny but not that hot, as you can always count on pleasant breezes here. The high altitudes of the Carpathians know crisp and cold winters, the summers are beautiful, but cooler. The lowlands in the country are usually quite cold and not very sunny in winter, but the summers are sunny and quite hot.

The Climatetable of Constanta / Konstanza is quite typical for the region of the coast on the Black Sea. Bucharest shows the climate east of the Carpathian Mountains, Arad the climate west of the Carpathian Mountains.

The best time for Romania can be estimated from May to September. But you should take into account that May and June can bring quite a lot of rain. Since late summer and autumn are usually drier than the summer months, September can be a pretty nice month - possibly October too, but it can be much cooler. Winter sports enthusiasts should get their money's worth especially in the period from December to April.
