Best Time To Travel To: Slovenia

Slovenia is largely defined by three climatic zones. The Mediterranean / Adriatic coast has a sub-Mediterranean climate. That means: mild winters and very warm summers. In the Alps and the Karawanken mountains, especially at higher altitudes, there is an alpine climate with not quite as warm summers and very cold winters with plenty of snow. The rest of the country has a predominantly continental climate. That means: the summers can get hot, the winters can get very cold.

The most important part of Slovenia for tourists is certainly the short stretch of the Adriatic. The climate there is typically Mediterranean with mild winters and warm sunny summers. The first mountains then rise behind the coast. The old formula applies here: the higher, the colder. In addition, the precipitation is higher here than on the coast. Another special feature: cold winds from the mountains can also affect the coastal region. When the bora blows, it gets noticeably colder on the coast.

Basically, the summers on the coast are never dry. Nevertheless, the weather is often sunny and warm, sometimes interrupted by brief storms. In winter you get four hours of sunshine a day, in summer up to twelve hours of sunshine.

The further you get inland, the more the climate resembles the typical Eastern European continental climate. Winters are cold, often very cold. Summers are warm and can often be hot and humid. In summer it rains the most here. In the north-west you come to alpine regions and have an alpine climate here.

When is the best time to visit Slovenia?

The best time for the Adriatic is roughly from March to October. It gets warmest in July and August. The Alps are relatively snow reliable from December to around April. This is the ideal travel time for skiers. The rest of the country offers the time from May to September as the best travel time.
