Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa. It lies between 1 ° and 12 ° south, i.e. close to the equator. The country has a large coastline on the Indian Ocean. There are borders with Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and the Democrat. Republic of the Congo.
Although the country is close to the equator, in the case of Tanzania one speaks more of a tropical climate. That means it is quite warm to hot all year round. Exceptions are of course the higher areas in the country.
In the east there is a very wide flat region, but in the interior Tanzania becomes more and more mountainous. On average, the mountains reach 1,500 meters, peak heights in the interior are around 3,000 meters. In the north of the country is the Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (5,895 meters). At the top you can find permanent snow and glacier areas.
As mentioned the temperatures in the lowlands are quite warm. The higher you go, the colder it gets. Especially at night, temperatures drop significantly at high altitudes. More rain falls on the coastal regions and offshore islands than inland. The high-lying regions in the country can receive even more precipitation. Overall, the rainfall is difficult to predict. More reliable statements can only be made in the north and around the larger lakes in the country.
Basically there is a rainy season in Tanzania. Most of the rain falls from November to April. The dry season is between May and October. The coastal region, however, is a special feature - it rains all year round, mostly between March and May. The south coast can receive a lot of rain and storms with the tropical cyclones that come from the southern Indian Ocean. On the northern coasts one can theoretically speak of two rainy seasons - once from March to May and then again from October to November.
Most visitors consider the country's climate to be very tolerable. The humidity is kept within limits, it is usually very sunny. The humidity can only be higher on the coast, but here the sea breezes soften the whole thing a little.
According to many experts, the best time for Tanzania is between June and September. It is then not very hot and relatively dry. In the mountains you always have to reckon with cool phases. For the north, the period from January to March could be ideal.
