Chile is an amazing country. It stretches over a length of 4,200km on the Pacific coast in South America. However, the country is only between 160 to 320km wide. In the east there are borders with Bolivia and Argentina. Through the country run the Andes, which rise to over 5,000 meters. In the south of Santiago, the mountain relief is not continuous and not as high. In front of the coast there are countless small islands.
If it is summer in Europe, it is winter in Chile. If it is winter in Europe, it is summer in Chile. Because of the extraordinarily large length expansion one finds many different climatic zones in Chile. The north and the center, for example, do not know a typical winter. In the coastal areas in the north, temperatures range between 15° and 30° Celsius all year round. It is almost always quite sunny with a rainy season from May to October.
Climatically, pretty much everything is offered in Chile but because of the many mountainous regions a mountain climate prevails. Above there is always snow and also many glacier areas.
The North is very special. It features one of the most humid regions of the worlt (borderregion to Peru from north to south) and is on the other hand globally spoken a quite dry region. On average it never gets very hot, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are relatively small. The weather is relatively stable throughout the year. Typical for the region is for example the climate table of Antofagasta.
In the center there is some sort of Mediterranean climate. Summers are dry and warm. Winters from April to September are mild and moderately humid, the weather is then changeable. Rainy season is from May to August. In the inland it can be snowy and also frosty, on the coast this is rarely the case. The coast is comparatively cloudier. Therefore, it is sunnier inland than on the coast. Typical for central Chile is the climate table of Santiago.
The south is a rather cool region and for the most part quite rainy throughout the year. At the higher elevations, much comes down as snow. Nevertheless, the winters are rarely extremely cold, whereas the summers are cool and cloudy. The weather is often compared to Norway. Punta Arenas is located far south on the Strait of Magellan. It rains less here because the area is protected by the Andes. But the climate table of Punta Arenas also shows that it rarely gets very warm. For the northern area, the climate table of Valdivia would be typical.
Of course, the best time to travel to Chile depends a lot on where you want to go or what you want to do. If you basically want it warmer, the north and the center are recommended. Here, the period from December to February is considered a good time to travel. The months of November and December are usually highlighted. March used to be mentioned as a good month for traveling, but the last few years have shown a tendency to storms here. February has also seen more extreme rainfall in recent years, although rarely. If you want it to be colder, you have to go to the south. From April to September, however, the region reliably receives a lot of rain, which can turn into snow at higher altitudes. For winter sports enthusiasts the period from June to August is interesting, where good winter sports conditions prevail in the Andean regions.
