Best Time To Travel To: Colombia

Colombia is located in South America and borders Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. The country also has stretches of coastline on the Pacific and Caribbean. The country stretches between 12° north to 4° south, the climate shows tropical tendencies. However, the country is also relatively mountainous and the climate changes significantly with increasing altitude. Basically, it is said for Colombia that the so-called hot zone is at an altitude of less than 1,000 meters. Here the climate is tropical. Between an altitude of 1,000 meters and 2,000 meters the climate is not quite as hot. Over 2,000 meters you come to the rather cooler areas. From about 4,500 meters you always have to expect snow.

Plains are found on the coastal areas as well as in the east in the Amazon basin.

The region on the Pacific coast and the central areas of the western Andes receive a relatively large amount of rain. In general, the climate there is characterized by quite high temperatures and also by high humidity. It is interesting to note that the precipitation occurs very often at night. In the afternoons you have to reckon with violent storms again and again. The climate table of Andagoya is typical of the region's climate.

The coastal areas of the Caribbean are drier, from December to March there is even a dry season. Here, too, it is always relatively warm, the humidity is also relatively high here. Very little rain falls in the east near the border with Venezuela.

As mentioned at the beginning, the interior of Colombia is relatively mountainous. In the Andean regions it rises up to 5,500 meters. Due to the differences in altitude, there are large differences in temperature here. Precipitation at altitudes above 4,500 meters often goes down as snow. The mountainous regions receive rainfall all year round, with the western slopes being more humid than those in the east.

Typical for the higher zone of the Tierra Fria is the climate table of Bogota. The nights are always cool here, but never completely cold. Frost is rare. During the day it is pleasantly warm in the sun, although you are never exposed to the very high heat. The further down you get, the more sunshine there is and the temperatures rise accordingly. The driest time here is normally in January and February.

The plains in the east of the country have a very warm to hot climate all year round. Here, too, it actually rains again and again. However, there are two clearly recognizable rainy seasons, December to January and April to May.

The main rainy season for the rest of Colombia can be set for April / May and from October to early December. In the tropical rainforest there is a rainy season from November to March.
