Egypt is a very dry country, rainfall is generally low, but there are surprisingly large regional and seasonal temperature fluctuations in the country.
If it rains, then most likely on the north coast and the Nile Delta. There, however, only up to 200 mm of precipitation fall in winter. South of Cairo, especially in the desert regions, it is very dry. In winter, especially in January, it can cool down quite a bit at night, but the average daytime temperatures are between 20 and 24°C.
In spring, or from March to June, a hot desert wind often blows, bringing with it great heat and, above all, sand. In summer the thermometer then rises to 31°C to 41°C (in Aswan), whereby the minimal humidity makes the heat well bearable.
Overall, it can be said that the climate in the coastal regions of the Red Sea is usually quite different and rather temperate with not so hot summers and mild winters.
The Mediterranean coast and the Nile Delta also have very mild winters, but the summers get hotter. This is also where most of the rain falls, but it is negligible at about 200mm. Precipitation is mainly concentrated in winter and then mostly around the Alexandria area. The highest temperatures of up to 45°C are measured here mainly in spring! Summers, on the other hand, are quite bearable. However, the humidity is highest in the region, which makes you feel the heat more and more.
In contrast to the Mediterranean coast and the Nile Delta, the area from Cairo to Asyut is very hot in summer (peaks up to 48°C). Winters are mild, and there is hardly any rainfall throughout the year. As a result, the humidity is lower and the heat has less of an impact.
The upper Nile valley (Aswan, Luxor, Dahkla) is also very dry. Winters are mild, but quite cool at night. Spring and autumn are pleasant, but very short and hardly pronounced. Summers are long and very hot (over 50°C) with very low humidity.
The coasts of the Red Sea are very convenient for Europeans. Winters are very mild, sometimes warm. Spring and autumn are also warm, summers are very warm (peak temperatures about 40°C). Humidity is in the pleasant middle range, there is relatively little rainfall.
The area of the Sinai Mountains is cool in winter, even cold at night. Spring and autumn are noticeable and pleasant, summers are warm (around 32°C), although it can get cool at night. It rains relatively little, the humidity is in the medium range.
Sharm-El-Sheik has a dry climate. Summers are quite warm, winters can be cool. Very dry are the months from May to August. Generally, spring and autumn are considered the best time to travel.
Cairo has a subtropical climate and is mainly determined by the nearby deserts. It is usually very warm and very dry. In the year there is on average only 25mm of precipitation. The average annual temperature is about 22°C. It is usually warmest in July (with peak temperatures of over 40°C), and coldest in January. Precipitation actually only falls between November and March, i.e. in winter. Summer, on the other hand, is usually very hot and dry (see also climate table below). The Nile Delta and the Mediterranean coast have a Mediterranean climate, where temperatures drop in winter and rainfall occurs. The rest of the country is subject to the desert climate: hot and dry in summer, mild in winter, mostly without precipitation with long periods of drought.
Egypt is a good destination all year round. It is mainly the planned activity that determines when is the best time to travel to Egypt. The best time to travel to Egypt to see much of the country or even to pursue studies is probably October and November or February to April. Then it is not quite so warm. For desert tours or trekking, the best travel time is probably between September and November and March to May. A bathing vacation is practically always possible. From June the water temperatures at the Red Sea rise to over 25 degrees. However, it is not recommended to go to Hurghada in winter, because it can cool down at night. For trips to Luxor, on the other hand, we recommend the winter from November to March, because otherwise it gets quite hot.
